After a beautiful morning at church last Sunday, I never envisioned that the day would turn cool, cloudy and share a little rain. I guess I needed to remember that in Minnesota, as in South Dakota, if you think the weather will stay great, wait five minutes and it will change. Change it did! Sweatshirts, hats and jackets were needed for what? For ..... our ..... apple picking!!!!
Our youth group invited all the families of elementary aged children to go apple picking across the river in Centerville, WI, at Ferguson's Apple Orchard. They have some really cool stuff for the kids to do.... hay bales to climb on, little riding tractors, spinning apple to ride in, a tee pee made out of corn stalks, a corn maze with a scarecrow to find. and of course apples to pick.
So, being that it was opening weekend of the NFL season, and the Packers and Vikings were to play Monday night, and with all the fun stuff at the orchard, we thought we'd get at least three or four families, but we got one and ours too. So, we made the best of it and had a good time.
Sam became our designated "leader" who had a large helping of energy. Up the rows and down the rows, up some more rows and down some more. Whew! We should have just given him the bags and let him fill them up with apples.
Half way through the picking... was that? is that? oooh, could it be? awwww it's rain. We got wet. Not as wet as we could have been, but wet enough to get back down to the shelter for some ... shelter and a bathroom break.
Along the way, though, Sam fell back and figured he could pick apples from anywhere... a no - no. You see, there were these areas, and these areas had yellow caution tape around them, and inside these yellow areas were apples that weren't ripe yet, so the apple orchard owner put yellow tape around to keep people out, but then came Sam Hansen, and Sam got into these areas and the apples looked so good, so Sam just had to pick a few. Must take after his mother. Ahem...
When we checked out, the owner did see the "extra" apples in the bag and looked at Sam and asked him if he had fun picking apples. Sam sheeplishly said, "Yessss." If Sam weren't so cute, he wouldn't have been able to get away with it. Must take after his Dad. Ahem....
